Johnny Depp showed up late to set on ‘virtually every movie’, former agent says

WARNING: This live blog contains allegations of physical and sexual violence that some readers may find distressing.

Amber Heard’s defence case continues in the defamation trial brought against her by ex-husband Johnny Depp.

Heard is being sued by Depp for $50m for implying he abused her in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed. Although she didn’t name him, he claims her allegations impacted his ability to work.

Testimony has been given by several of Heard’s former friends as well as her acting coach and makeup artist. They have all recalled either seeing or documenting her injuries and most to being present during alleged altercations with Depp. Raquel Pennington testified that she feared for her friend’s safety.

Heard’s sister Whitney recalled Depp’s drug and alcohol use and separate incidents involving holding a dog out of a car window and hurling clothes racks down the stairs during a row.

This morning Depp’s longtime friend spoke of a jealous streak in the actor, while his former agent said he romanticised drugs and constantly showed up late to sets impacting his career.

Before the morning break, Depp’s ex-business manager described his increasingly dire financial situation and “erratic behaviour” relating to drugs and alcohol.

Depp’s former friend says Marilyn Manson isn’t to blame for actor’s drug use

Johnny Depp’s former long-time friend Bruce Witkin testified on Thursday (19 May) that Marilyn Manson isn’t to blame for the Pirates actor’s drug use.

While on the stand, Depp – who was briefly married to Witkin’s sister-in-law Lori Anne Allison – claimed he once gave Manson a pill to stop him from talking so much.

Relating quotes in three Daily Mail articles, Mr Waldman does confirm that he did make the statements about Heard attributed to him.

The quotes are:

“Amber Heard and her friends in the media use fake sexual violence allegations as both a sword and shield, depending on their needs … They have selected some of her sexual violence hoax ‘facts’ as the sword, inflicting them on the public and Mr Depp.”

“Quite simply this was an ambush, a hoax. They set Mr Depp up by calling the cops but the first attempt didn’t do the trick. The officers came to the penthouses, thoroughly searched and interviewed, and left after seeing no damage to face or property. So Amber and her friends spilled a little wine and roughed the place up, got their stories straight under the direction of a lawyer and publicist, and then placed a second call to 911.”

“…we have reached the beginning of the end of Ms Heard’s abuse hoax against Johnny Depp.”

He cannot answer anything else about the quotes.

Despite the numerous instructions from Depp’s counsel, Mr Waldman confirms he did not meet Depp until after the relationship with Heard had finished and so has no in-person knowledge of what went on between the couple.

He also confirms that since he began representing Depp, the actor has filed a number of lawsuits. Due to the interjections from Ben Chew, little progress is made in questioning.

Former agent says Depp showed up late to set on ‘virtually every movie’

Johnny Depp showed up late to set on “virtually every movie,” according to his former agent.

Tracey Jacobs claimed that the Pirates of the Caribbean star developed a reputation for arriving late to movie sets, which made people in the film industry “reluctant to use him”.

The acting agent – who has represented stars including Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lopez, and British actor Simon Pegg – gave testimony on Thursday 19 May in the ongoing defamation trial brought by Depp against his ex-wife, Amber Heard.

As Depp’s attorney, Mr Waldman’s testimony is peppered with interjections from Depp’s lawyer in the defamation case, Ben Chew, on the grounds of attorney-client privilege.

This is very slow going.

Mr Mandel testifies that at times Depp’s prescription pills bill was thousands of dollars per month and sometimes damages would need to be paid for the destruction of property at hotels or rentals.

Between July 2015 and March 2016, the increasingly dire state of Depp’s finances led to conversations that were more heated and contentious in tone, says Mr Mandel. He encouraged Depp to sell some of his properties, specifically the one in the south of France.

Eventually the business relationship was terminated. Mr Mandell testifies that he did not steal from Depp and has never been found to have committed financial malfeasance.

Former agent says Depp ‘romanticised’ drugs and has ‘fundamental issues with anger’

Johnny Depp “romanticised” drugs and had “fundamental issues with anger”, according to his former agent who testified in the Pirates of the Caribbean star’s multi-million-dollar defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard.

Tracey Jacobs, who was Mr Depp’s agent for 30 years, gave video testimony to the court in Fairfax, Virginia, on Thursday morning where she claimed that his increasingly “difficult” reputation meant people around Hollywood grew “reluctant” to work with him.

Mr Mandel testifies about the increasingly poor state of Depp’s financial affairs: “My warnings in 2015 that we were in very dire financial circumstances were not met very well.”

He says that from 2010 and on he recalls income was very significant, but spending was also very significant.

“At various times, when we would have these conversations, he would acknowledge that he understood,” says Mr Mandel.

He adds that Depp would make expressions of a commitment to do what was necessary to fix the situation.

“There never seemed to be any follow through when the things needed to be teed up to make it happen, to make those things real. It never happened.”
