RMT confirm rail strikes will go ahead on Thursday

Rail passengers are facing fresh disruption across the train network as workers stage a second day of strike action amid a bitter dispute over jobs, pay and conditions.

Talks were held on Wednesday between the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT), Network Rail and rail operators in a bid to break the deadlocked row, but no breakthrough was reached.

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch gesê: 'Grant Shapps has wrecked these negotiations by not allowing Network Rail to withdraw their letter threatening redundancy for 2,900 of our members.

“Until the government unshackle Network Rail and the train operating companies, it is not going to be possible for a negotiated settlement to be agreed.”

But Mr Shapps accused Mr Lynch of telling a “total lie”, arguing he had “absolutely nothing to do” with the issuing of a letter from Network Rail or any request to withdraw it.

Rail talks to continue on second day of strike – while union boss talks of pursuit by the media

Mick Lynch, general secretary of the RMT, says talks between his union will resume this morning.

He told ITV Good Morning Britain: “We’ll be back in this morning with both parties, the train operating companies and Network Rail to try and work out a settlement.

“We’ve show that our members are determined to get a reasonable deal from these employers, and try and get a reasonable deal from an unreasonable government.

“We’re getting loads and loads of people from the public who use our services, and it’s essential now that we get an agreement and the government facilitates that agreement.”

Mr Lynch also said that he was being pursued by the media.

“I’m aware the press in this country is controlled by very rich people will be looking to tarnish my reputation and [that of] other people involved in this dispute,” he said – adding that a cameraman has been following him for a week and that reporters had been talking to his neighbours and even investigating the contents of his bins.
