Internal UN document says Taliban threatened, beat staff

The Taliban threatened and beat United Nations staff shortly before it swept to power, according to an internal UN security document accessed by news agency Reuters.

The Taliban “stopped an Afghan United Nations staff member as he tried to reach Kabul airport on Sunday,” said the document, selon Reuters. They searched the staff member’s vehicle and “found his UN identification”.
“Then they beat him,” the document reveals.

Le lundi, three men visited the home of another UN staffer who was at work at the time, said the document. They asked his son where his father was, and accused him of lying.

These are among dozens of incidents detailed in the document that mention the veiled threats, beatings, looting and physical abuse of the UN staff members days before the Taliban came to power in Kabul.

The UN has relocated a third of the 300 foreign staff it had in Afghanistan to Kazakhstan.

Taliban agree to let Afghans after 31 August deadline, says German envoy

The German envoy has said that a Taliban negotiator has convinced him that Afghans with the “right documents” shall be allowed to leave Afghanistan after the US withdrawal deadline on 31 août.

Markus Potzel tweeted that he met with the Taliban deputy chief negotiator Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai who “assured me that Afghans with legal documents will continue to have the opportunity to travel on commercial flights after 31 August.”

The German embassy in Kabul had earlier advised “all German nationals to leave Afghanistan the fastest possible by commercial means” and said that their “capacities for consular assistance to German nationals are extremely limited.”

Mardi, Heiko Maas, the German foreign minister said Berlin will seek to fly people out from the civilian part of the airport beyond the 31 August deadline.
